Root Canal ReTreatment is similar to Root Canal Treatment, in that it entails cleaning, disinfection and sealing of the root canal space inside of a tooth. The main difference is that rather than removing an infected, inflamed nerve, we are removing an old root canal filling that has become re-infected.
With reinfected teeth, this process is usually completed over two or more appointments to ensure adequate disinfection of the tooth. If this is the case, the first visit will be to clean out the old root canal filling and place an antibacterial medication inside the tooth.
At the second appointment, the ReTreatment can be completed as long as the tooth is feeling better.
We often place a foundation filling after completing the root canal treatment to help rebuild the tooth. If the tooth is a molar or premolar, often a crown is needed (completed by your dentist) as a final step to fix the tooth.
